Superior Pump 91330 Submersible Utility Pump Review

Superior 91330 Utility Pump

One of the most important things when selecting a pool cover pump is to make sure you buy a pump that is not only strong enough for the job but will also have multiple uses. When it comes to water pumps, the best ones for your pool cover are normally also good in other areas like pumping water from the actual pool or for use in your basement or hot tub. In this case, we’re taking a look at another dual use pump in the Superior 91330 Submersible Utility Pump which is not only strong enough to keep your pool cover dry but can drain an entire pool or hot tub when needed.

The Superior 91330 utility pump is made by the Superior Pump Co. out of Minneapolis, MN and as Superior will tell you, this pump is built to last and can tackle just about any standing water job it encounters. The main thing that puts this pump in a class of it’s own centers around it’s thermoplastic construction which is far ‘superior‘ (excuse the pun) than most others on the market.

For starters, the Superior 91330 has a one piece motor housing which basically means you have stronger construction with less fault areas and this also allows the heat from the motor to be dissipated quicker. And when a motor can get rid of the heat quicker, you have a more efficient pump that lasts longer and is not prone to breakage. Knowing that your pump will be out in the elements for long periods of time running constantly to get the water off of the pool cover, it’s nice to know you have a well constructed machine doing the job and that your investment is protected.

Superior has also gone the extra mile by providing not one but two double o-ring seals on the motor plate which prevents water from seeping into the motor housing and the protective oil from leaking out. Again, water and motors don’t mix so knowing you have good construction and less areas where water can get into areas it shouldn’t is what makes Superior pumps ideal for pool owners.

HOW FAST WILL THE SUPERIOR 91330 WORK?

When it comes to quickly and efficiently pumping water off the top of a pool cover or draining a pool, the Superior 91330 will do it quickly utilizing it’s 1-1/4″ discharge which allows for high throughput pumping. This means no more standing around waiting for the pump to catch up as the rain continues to build heavy puddles on your pool cover.

And if you ever need to drain a pool because of repairs or even when you need to reduce the level of the pool in the fall to install the winter cover, the Superior 91330 will do that job as well and better than most others. One user noted that they have used the pump to drain an entire 15,000 gallon pool in a weekend that not only saved them time but also the money they would have spent at the local rental company to rent an industrial size pump. It’s definitely a strong little pump and well work the money.

HOW TO USE THE SUPERIOR 91330 PUMP

The Superior 91330 is an easy pump to use, especially when it comes to using it as a pool cover pump. The main thing you will want to remember is that you will not want to ‘set it and forget it” as the Superior pump should not be left alone to do the job since it requires at least a small amount of water for cooling and lubrication of parts.

So when it comes to removing standing water from a pool cover just attach a garden hose to the discharge, place the Superior 91330 directly on the cover in the area where a majority of the water has accumulated and then plug the power cord into a grounded 120V AC outlet. Since there is no on/off button, the pump will begin pumping water as soon as it’s plugged in. At a rate of 40-gallons per minute, the Superior 91330 will make quick work of any water on your pool cover and take the level down to around a 1/2″ from the surface. when you’re finished just unplug the pump and let it sit until the next time it’s needed.

If you live in an area like I do you will eventually encounter a lot of leaves and debris that will get mixed in with the accumulated water on the pool cover and that can be a real pain when it comes to removing the water. The good news is that the Superior 91330 has an intake screen on the bottom which prevents this debris from jamming up the pump and can also be removed and cleaned out if necessary too. What I do is let the pump remove as much water as possible and that allows me to scoop the debris off the cover with ease.

When you’re finished just unplug the pump and move it indoors as this will prolong the life of the pump. You can also leave it sitting on the pool cover but I would only recommend this if the weather was not going below freezing. Other pumps like the RULE 1800 AUTOMATIC POOL COVER PUMP can be left out all season with no issues but for the Superior 91330 I would say it’s best to take it indoors after each use during very cold times of year.

WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THE SUPERIOR 91330 UTILITY PUMP?

I would say most people like this pump as an all around utility pump that is constructed well and lasts a long time. Too many electronics or motorized products these days do not last long and break easily but Superior makes a really good pump (backed up by a 1-Year Warranty) that you can easily rely on for years to come. It’s also a multi-use pump meaning you can use it to drain your pool and hot tub, remove water from a pool cover or use it as a sump pump in your basement should the need arise. Wherever there is standing water that needs to be removed, the Superior 91330 can most likely do the job quickly.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

Overall the Superior 91330 1/3 HP Thermoplastic Submersible Utility Pump has great reviews on Amazon.com with an overall rating of 4.8 out of 5-stars. Some of the more positive things people said included:

  • “I would definitely recommend it…”
  • “If you need to drain your pool, don’t rent a pump. Just buy this one…”
  • “I would recommend this product for anyone who needs to pump water at a quick rate…”
  • “This pump performed very well…5 Star Pump!”
  • “A convenient and powerful pump for general household use…”

  • “The pump worked fine and pushed the water out nicely – even with a garden hose attached. I would definitely recommend it…”

CONCLUSION

I would say overall this is probably one of the best utility pumps on the market if you want the ‘jack of all trades.’ It does everything really well and for our purposes here, it does a good job of moving water off of a pool cover quickly. We do prefer the RULE 1800 Pool Cover Pump in situations where you want to leave the pump out all season long, but if you are OK with manually removing the pump when not in use than this is by far a really good solution and best in class.

I’ve found this pump also to be one of the most reasonable when it comes to it’s price tag. For the Superior 91330 Pump, the price is super reasonable and you definitely get more for your hard earned money.
