When To Use a Pool Skimmer Sock

pool skimmer sockFor those that have an above ground pool and live in areas where tree leaves, dust and dirt are prevalent, a pool skimmer sock can sometimes be a life saver, especially for sand filter pumps.

In my area of Northeast Pennsylvania near our home, we have lots of ‘dirty’ trees and on top of that we live basically on top of a hilly area where the wind blows most days of the year. All it takes is a bit of wind or a small breeze to kick up and before you know it the pool has leaves and dirt flying into it. As any pool owner knows, this is simply something you deal with but for areas like mine that have it happening more often, you may want to consider helping your skimmer and pool sand filter out by installing a very simple and cheap skimmer basket sock.

WHAT IS A SKIMMER BASKET SOCK?

A skimmer sock, sometimes called a filter saver sock or a skimmer basket liner, is a round shaped piece of fabric that stretches around your skimmer basket and it filters the fine particles that many times will make their way through the skimmer and into the pool filter. It basically aids your pool filter by removing small particles of debris that can gum up a pool filter and makes your filter more efficient. And if you have a more efficient pool filter, you will have clearer more sparkling water for sure.

HOW TO USE SKIMMER SOCKS

skimmer basket sockThe pool skimmer sock helped us a tremendous amount this past season as we had a HUGE issue with beetles. In eastern Pennsylvania this past summer, there were so many beetles flying around in June and July that if you had a pool you were skimming them out a few times a day. The beetles would get stuck in the skimmer baskets, they would die and begin breaking apart and pretty soon your pool filter was full of little bug parts. It was a mess both inside the filter as well as our pool as sometimes the bug parts and legs would get back into the pool and settle on the pool floor. We decided to buy a pack of filter saver socks and put one over the basket every day and pretty soon those beetle issues were a thing of the past. The socks prevented the beetles (and their ‘parts’) from getting into our sand filter and it allowed us to get through a tough part of the summer without having to vacuum our pool every day.

They are easy to install. They simply stretch across your skimmer basket and then you place the basket back into the skimmer as you normally would. In some cases the extra fabric around the basket makes it a tight fit in the skimmer, but the pressure generated from the pool pump will normally pull the basket into place in the skimmer and everything will operate normally. It’s super easy.

HOW LONG DOES A SKIMMER BASKET SOCK LAST?

Depending on how bad the situation is, the sock can last a day or several days at most. And considering how inexpensive these things are, it’s well worth the time and money to use them every couple of days to save you the aggravation of vacuuming a pool and backwashing a filter every day. It certainly will not hurt your pool or filter to skimmer sockhave it on 24×7 as long as you check it every so often and remove it if it gets too dirty and stresses the pool pump. Honestly leaving it on helped us a tremendous amount during ‘beetle season’ and we certainly went through our fair share of the basket liners. But it was worth it.

I would say this. I think everyone who owns an above ground pool should have a pack or two of the skimmer socks around at all times. During those times when bugs are getting into the pool water, dirt is flying around more often or in the Fall when the leaves are falling from trees more often into your pool, I would put on a sock on the skimmer basket and leave it there 24-hours a day until the dirt, leaves and bugs go away…at least for the most part!

I hope this helped. If you have any questions about skimmer socks, let me know in the comments below. Thanks!
